Why the Wrist Takes the Hit

The wrist wasn't designed to be a primary weight-bearing joint the way the ankle or the ball of the foot is.   • Actively grip, don’t just rest. Spread your fingers wide, press firmly through your knuckles, and engage the muscles of your hand and forearm rather than letting your weight settle passively into your palm.
  • Adjust your hand placement. Slightly rotating your fingers outward or shifting more weight into the base of your index finger and thumb can relieve pressure directly on the wrist.
  • Warm up your wrists specifically. Gentle circles, extension and flexion stretches, and light weight-bearing before a full practice go a long way.
  • Know when to drop to your forearms. Poses like Dolphin or a forearm-supported Plank take the wrist out of the equation entirely when you need a break from weight-bearing.
  • Build in rest points. Wrist strain tends to show up later in a practice, not at the beginning. A brief Child’s Pose or wrist release between weight-bearing sections can meaningfully reduce cumulative load.

If you're working toward inversions or arm balances, the same principles apply, just with higher stakes: build wrist strength progressively, prioritize active engagement over passive weight-bearing, and don't treat prop use as a beginner's crutch.
